The extension of the Istanbul airport, inaugurated in October 2018 and fully operational since last year when it replaced the Ataturk airport, continues.
Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan will be taking part in an inauguration ceremony on Sunday, when the third of six runways planned by 2028 will be opened. In 2028, the airport will be the largest in the world. The airport will rise in capacity by 50% and landings and takeoffs will be able to happen contemporaneously on all runways, Transport Minister Adil Karaismailoglu said.
The extension is being inaugurated a few days prior to the resumption of international flights after a three-month halt due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
