TUI Germany Announces Base for its Boeing 787

TUIfly will base two Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners in Dusseldorf...

In November 2019, the TUI Group announced that it will start own long-haul operations from Germany with its German subsidiary TUIfly (X3/TUI). On January 9, the German airline disclosed where the base for its long-haul aircraft will be located. As of the European winter season 2020/21, TUIfly will base two Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners in Dusseldorf, which will operate routes to the Dominican Republic and Mexico, where the TUI Group owns many hotels.

Besides those flights for hotel guests in the Americas, it is also planned to operate charter flights for the company’s cruises. “With the decision to base the Dreamliner in Dusseldorf, we are relying on the region Rhine-Ruhr and the good cooperation with the airport,” Oliver Lackmann, Managing Director of TUIfly, stated. “We were very pleased with the decision by TUIfly to set up its long-haul operation at their largest base. I am very sure that the project will be a successful story, ” Thomas Schnalke, CEO of Dusseldorf Airport, stated.

Further expansion plans for the long-haul operation are still pending. The TUI Group in November stated the German airline will operate with up to five Boeing 787 Dreamliners. Lackmann further stated, “if capacities are reduced in the coming months due to further market changes, we can also implement our planned fleet expansion more quickly.”

To get the flight’s load factor to a maximum, the travel group is dependent on the support of other tour operators. This includes travel agencies such as DER Touristik and FTI who have previously booked their customers on flights with Eurowings (EW/EWG) or Condor (DE/CFG) for flights to the Caribbean. With their own flights, TUIfly hopes to get bookings from non-TUI travel agencies, too.
